“通用学术英语”系列选题是为顺应我国新一轮大学英语教学改革而开发的适用于本科生和研究生使用的新形态教材。 根据Edward de Chazal在English for Academic Purposes中提出的通用学术英语技能要素，本选题第一、二册，将通用学术英语能力解构成36项微技能，每项微技能都从听、说、读、写、思、词汇六个维度进行精讲精练。根据Bloom的学习目标分类框架，本选题对36项微技能进行学习目标分类：记忆、理解、应用、分析、评价、创造，并按照由易到难安排教材内容。针对36项微技能涵盖的通用学术英语能力，通过mini-lecture和study tip呈现要点与重点；通过任务设计，引导学生在“做中学”（learning by doing），循序渐进习得学术英语知识与技能。本选题注重审辩式思维能力与语言技能的关联。语言与思维密不可分，学术英语能力培养更应重视批判性思维能力与语言技能的培养同步进行。 《通用学术英语1》围绕Education、System、Behavior、Psychology、Energy、Nature、Technology、Environment等8个话题，通过听、说、读、写等环环相扣的任务设计，通过课堂教学与在线学习相结合的翻转课堂教学设计，引导学生掌握并应用How to define、How to narrate、How to contextualize background information、How to describe 等微技能，从而达到提高学生学术英语素养和审辩式思维能力的目的。
